The Immersion Experience

Although the classes described below are an important component of the summer institute, the immersion experience is a full-time commitment that extends beyond the classroom. The program includes shared meals and a group living environment, afternoon and evening activities, and excursions in and around Madison. Students are expected to communicate in their target language exclusively for the duration of the 8-week program, with the exception of Friday evening “breaks” and a limited number of other specific exceptions.


General Course Information

All courses run for 8 weeks, and provide a minimum of 180 in-class contact hours. Upon completion of the program, students wishing to transfer language credits to their home institution may request a transcript from UW-Madison showing their grades and academic credits, which should then be submitted to the appropriate office at the student’s home institution.

The following are model course descriptions and syllabi, and are intended to give a general idea of the different levels. Each summer the specific course content will be modified based on the instructor’s assessment of student ability and pre-program placement results.

Elementary Summer Immersion Arabic

  • 8 credits, African Lang. & Lit. 327 (LCA/African 327)
  • Texts: Alif Baa (3rd ed.) and Al-Kitaab Part One (3rd ed.), as well as the Hans Wehr Dictionary of Modern Written Arabic.
  • Course Description: Introduces students to the basic Modern Standard Arabic skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking with the incorporation of the Arabic cultural knowledge necessary for efficient and real-life communication in the Arabic language in different situations.

Intermediate Summer Immersion Arabic

  • 8 credits, African Lang. & Lit. 427 (LCA/African 427)
  • Text: Al-Kitaab Part Two (3rd ed.), as well as the Hans Wehr Dictionary of Modern Written Arabic.
  • Course description: Students registering for this course are expected to have completed the first twelve lessons of Al-Kitaab fii Ta’allum al-‘Arabiyya, Part One 2nd ed. (or the equivalent). The course will offer students more opportunities to increase listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Arabic. Students will focus on acquiring more vocabulary and more knowledge of the fundamental grammatical structures in order to attain a higher level of proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic to communicate. By the end of the course, students should have internalized the principles of word formation, be able to recognize roots and patterns, use the dictionary with ease, and be able to vocalize texts in demonstrating a mastery of morphological and syntactic structures. Students are expected to improve on their communication skills beyond the simple short sentence and to speak in extended discourse at the paragraph level when narrating in past, present and future tenses.

Advanced Summer Immersion Arabic

  • 8 credits, African Lang. & Lit. 527 (LCA/African 527)
  • Text: Arabiyyaat al-naas, and a variety of supplemental materials.
  • Course Description: The goals of this course are for you to continue to increase your vocabulary, to develop your abilities in oral and written expression, and to complete the study of the fundamental syntactical and morphological structures essential to an understanding of modern literary Arabic. It is assumed that the students successfully completing this course will be proficient in the principles governing the voweling of texts and have a working knowledge of the concepts taught Arab secondary students in their study of Arabic morphology and syntax and approach a degree of oral fluency equivalent to “intermediate high” on the scale devised by the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). The one skill to be given primary emphasis in the classroom is ORAL PROFICIENCY.

Elementary Summer Immersion Persian

  • 8 credits, Languages & Cultures of Asia 328 (LCA 328)
  • Text: Persian in Use: An Elementary Textbook of Language and Culture
  • Course Description: This course is designed for students wishing to engage in the intensive study of the fundamental structure of Persian language, using the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). In addition, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary are incorporated into the daily activities.

Intermediate Summer Immersion Persian

  • 8 credits, Languages & Cultures of Asia 428 (LCA 428)
  • Text: Course Reader and supplementary materials compiled by instructors.
  • Course Description: Devised for students who have studied 2-3 semesters of Persian or its equivalent. This course is designed to help students develop intermediate competence in oral and written comprehension and expression of the Persian language. Emphasis is on listening comprehension, reading, speaking, writing, and cultural and historical knowledge. Knowledge of the grammatical structures taught in the first three semesters is assumed, while we review them and introduce advanced grammar preferably in context.

Advanced Summer Immersion Persian

  • Course Description: Devised for students who have studied at least two years of Persian and achieved a solid understanding of intermediate level course content. This course is designed to provide extensive reading of classical and modern Persian texts, with practice in grammar and composition at an advanced level.

Elementary Summer Immersion Turkish

  • Text: various
  • Course Description: Designed to introduce the fundamentals of Turkish language and culture through the knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The main goal of this course is to help students improve both fluency and accuracy at the same time. This course will focus on grammar and pronunciation, and provide explanations and practice exercises relating to these. The course will provide basic useful and important Turkish grammar points, pronunciation, vocabulary, expressions, along with interesting Turkish cultural information. A multi skill approach will be used in this course. Participants will be asked to work with different types of supplementary materials, completing a variety of tasks for different purposes.

  • Course Description: Designed to help students develop intermediate competence in oral and written comprehension and expression of the Turkish language. Emphasis is on listening comprehension, reading, speaking, writing, and cultural and historical knowledge. Knowledge of the grammatical structures taught in a typical beginning course is assumed, while we review them and introduce advanced grammar preferably in context. The first few weeks will emphasize pronunciation and grammar. You can expect to engage in group and pair work and to take part actively in class. Your ability to communicate in Turkish will increase as you apply yourself in class and outside of the classroom.

Advanced Summer Immersion Turkish

  • Text: various
  • Course Description: Designed to build proficiency in the Turkish language through encounters with a variety of authentic texts, audio, video and multimedia materials. The course will not only develop language skills but will also explore Turkish culture. The course will proceed in thematic units. Students will have the opportunity to develop comprehension and advanced grammar analysis through reading the authentic materials and listening comprehension through a variety of audio and video material, speaking competence through discussion and debate, and writing competence. Students will also build research skills and learn to use library and online resources by writing a final paper using Turkish sources.
